Accredited Workers
Accredited workers that hold a Speaker, Medium and or Spiritual Healer certificate granted by the Star of Hope Spiritualist Church (SOH) are required to conduct themselves in a manner that appropriately and ethically represents the religion of Spiritualism and the Star of Hope Spiritualist Church as specified in this Code of Conduct and Ethics. General Conduct and Ethics
Accredited workers certified by the are required to:
- Uphold our Seven Spiritual Principles
- Support and promote the work and aims of the SOH
- Have a positive and healthy attitude that contributes to the growth of Spiritualism Demonstrate integrity, professionalism and courtesy when engaged in platform work or spiritual healing
- Respect the confidentiality of personal or privileged information
- Respect the right of other persons, Spiritualists or otherwise, to their own personal philosophy and beliefs
- Uphold Local, Federal and Provincial laws (the SOH will not be held responsible for unlawful behaviour of certificate holders)
- Refrain from speech that is offensive, demeaning, racist, sexist, phobic, or in any way inappropriate
Platform Etiquette
Certified Speakers and Mediums of the SOH are required to observe platform etiquette when invited to work in a Spiritualist church, including their own.
- Dress appropriately (some churches have dress codes requirements)
- Greet the rostrum and the congregation
- Thank the rostrum for having invited you to serve
- Say something positive about the church
- If you are speaking, stick to the time limit you may have been given
- If you are the medium, do your work and stop when called to time
- When you have finished, thank congregation and thank the rostrum once again
- At all times behave in a professional and respectful manner
- Refrain from speech that is offensive, racist, sexist, phobic, or in any way inappropriate (this applies to jokes also)
Speakers
You have a great opportunity to bring inspiration and knowledge to other Spiritualists.
- Adhere to the rules of the church in which you are working
- Attune to spirit so that your words come from the highest and best
- Choose a subject that is uplifting, edifying and that reflects the philosophy of Spiritualism and supports the aims of the SOH
- Ensure that your language is appropriate at all times
- Refrain from speech that is offensive, racist, sexist, phobic, or in any way inappropriate (this applies to jokes also)
- Respect the work of others, even if you disagree
- Keep on developing and improving your gift
Mediumship
Mediumship is a sacred office and a privilege.
- Adhere to the rules of the church in which you are working
- Attune to spirit so that the messages you convey come from the highest and best
- Strive to demonstrate evidential mediumship, rather than psychic insights
- Never give messages that are offensive, demeaning or disrespectful (messages from a higher source are uplifting, healing and loving)
- Respect the work of others, even if you disagree
- When sharing a platform with other mediums, do not contradict or correct the messages they have given
Spiritual Healers
Spiritual Healers represent the highest form of mediumship.
- Adhere to the rules of the church in which you are working
- Remember that the source of healing is God and not you
- Wear clean clothes, have clean hands
- Ask permission to touch before beginning a healing session
- Practice appropriate touch: one that honours the body of the recipient
- Avoid any kind of touching that may appear as massage or manipulation (the law prohibits this unless you are certified as a massage therapist)
- Never diagnose or prescribe, even if you think that the information comes from spirit
- Never promise a cure
- When giving healing to a child, ensure that you have the parent or guardian’s permission
- Be aware of the Federal and Provincial laws that pertain to alternative healing
- Show consideration and care for persons receiving healing and respect any confidences shared
- Never be disrespectful
Ordained Ministers
Code of Conduct & Ethics for Ordained Ministers

- Overview: The Seven Spiritual Principles provide the basic foundation as a religion, philosophy and science, and therein the parameters under which a Star of Hope (SOH) ordained minister must adhere to when representing themselves as a Spiritualist
- Procedural Details:
- Principles – Ministers are required to:
- Uphold and maintaining the Seven Spiritual Principles, promote and support the work of the Star of Hope Spiritualist Church.
- At all times, when representing Spiritualism conduct themselves in a manner respectful of the religion.
- General Conduct – Ministers will:
- At all times, act with honesty, integrity, and diligence;
- Contribute to a positive and healthy environment for all people involved in the spiritualist movement;
- Discharge all duties with integrity and strive towards attaining a high standard of professional decorum;
- Respect the confidentiality of personal and privileged information;
- Abide by the laws of Canada, as well as those of the province in which they reside and/or operate
- Except with authorization, ensure that actions do not result in financial or other liability for the Star of Hope Spiritualist Church;
- Work collaboratively with Ministers within the SOH and other spiritual organizations around the world.
- Minister – Congregant Relationship – The relationship between minister and congregant requires that the minister understand their unique position of authority and perceived power. Ministers have a duty of care and responsibility to ensure that parishioners are treated with dignity and respect.
When providing service, ministers are required to:- Treat congregants in a manner that maintains dignity and respects their beliefs, culture, customs and habits;
- Provide assistance within their recognized capacity to do so;
- Understand the client’s vulnerability and act accordingly;
- Provide assistance regardless of race, colour, national or ethnic origin, language, age, sex, sexual orientation, disability, physical characteristics, political opinions or other ground of discrimination prohibited under applicable provincial and federal laws or tenets of Spiritualism;
- Respect the privacy of information being shared with respect to his or her personal information, image and property.Breaches Regarded as Serious Misconduct – The following behaviour or actions are considered serious acts of misconduct:
- Action or speech that is humiliating, neglectful, dishonest, threatening, abusive, bullying, exploitive, illegal, sexist, phobic, or racist;
- Exercising any professional activity without valid certification(s);
- Engaging in, or being associated with, any business or activity that is, or may be, in conflict with the interests of the Star of Hope Spiritualist Church
- Principles – Ministers are required to:
- Off Duty Conduct: Ministers should remember that they may be seen as representatives at any time, even when off duty. Off duty activities that, in the absence of reasonable justification, adversely affect Spiritualism, or which, when seen through the eyes of a reasonable observer discredit the SOH are also breaches of the Code of Conduct.
- Proof of Compliance: All ministers with the SOH are required to sign the Code of Conduct every 5 years unless this document is revised or there is reasonable cause to revisit this signed document before that time. The SOH will keep their copy in a secure location at their head office.
- Disciplinary Action: A breach of the Code of Conduct is subject to disciplinary action. The nature of disciplinary action will take into account harm to the individual and/or harm to the reputation of Spiritualism.Disciplinary action includes removal or suspension of ministerial rights and membership revoked, where circumstances warrant.
- Responsibilities: The SOH Board of Directors is responsible for advising the minister of this policy and notifying them of any breaches that come to their attention. All reports will be addressed in an impartial and neutral manner in order to ensure that all matters are treated fairly
