Spiritualism FAQs
Spiritualism
Is an officially recognized religion with its own churches, centres and ministers. Spiritualists have the same rights and privileges as other religions. Spiritualism has no founding prophet, or scriptures. Since the initial manifestations that marked the advent of Modern Spiritualism at Hydesville, New York, in 1848, to this day, Spirit has continuously revealed itself through the dedicated services of our mediums in order to teach, guide, comfort, encourage or heal.
Spirit
The personal mind which cannot be destroyed. Sometimes referred to as the Soul. During life on earth, it is limited by the body. Most often the word ‘spirit’ is used to describe a person who has died in the earthly (physical) sense, yet still possesses a body. This body is seemingly solid to the spirit, although it is not of the same kind of material as the one left on earth. There is a higher degree of sympathetic thought communion, which binds similar-minded spirits in co-operative friendship.
Soul
The essence of the person. It carries on living in a finer body, one which vibrates at a much higher frequency, after we cross over (physical death).
Reincarnation
A belief that a person is reborn to earth in a series of bodies in order to learn lessons and to progress to a higher state of consciousness. Some cultures believe that reincarnation can occur between species, ie: a person may come back as an animal or vice versa.
ESP
Extra Sensory Perception is the contact of a mind in a body with another mind in a body. It is a mental faculty. Al beings have it to a greater or lesser degree. It is the instinctive, protective faculty.
Orbs
There is much controversy around Orbs which usually appear in photographs and can also appear and disappear from a photograph. Some people can actually see them.
Ghostudy.com says “Orbs have many names including globes, globules, balls of light, and hovering round balls. They appear in all ranges of brightness from bright & glowing to faded & barely visible. They are usually quite fast and follow an erratic pattern of flight. Positive orbs are believed to be the spirits of the dead by many. However, other theories suggest that they might be separate life forms or even nature spirits. The problem is that many orb photos are false positives.”
Pyschometry
It is the ability of the medium to read the energy vibrations emanating from articles held in the hand and to give the names and messages of people connected with the article. It is sometimes called a form of clairvoyance because psychic vision and the intuitive ability of the soul to sense invisible relationships are at times indistinguishable from each other. The name means Soul Measuring, psycho meaning soul and metry meaning measuring.
Spirit Photography
It is the appearance of a spirit entity on photograph paper. The photograph paper is held between the hands of a sitter and a reproduction will appear; some photographs have been a copy of existing photographs and sometimes it is an entirely new pose. Mediums have been known to find “extras” on their photographs of specific events.
Spiritual Healing
Silver Birch, the great Spirit Teacher, said of Spiritual Healing:
“The technique is really simple, though the effects are profound. You have a sufferer, a healer and you have the Great Spirit. All that happens is that divine power, part of the Great Spirit, part of the life-force, has to be transmitted through the healer’s spiritual faculties to the sufferer’s spirit body. This is in essence, the whole process. There is no secret, there is no magic; there is just the operation of natural law. The power of the Spirit is infinite.”
The word Healing or Healer is a misnomer. Healers don’t actually heal. They channel healing energies to help re-balance a person’s energy and create an environment so the person can heal themselves.
Spiritual healing works in conjunction with and complements western medical practices. Spiritual Healing can encompass healing on 4 levels including the physical, mental, emotional as well as the spiritual (soul).
Pyschic
A person who has developed their abilities so they can read another person’s aura. We are said to carry with us all the information of our past, present and future lives. A Psychic can read this information to help a person understand their lives. However, a Psychic can only read a person’s path as it stands at one point in time. Any decisions made by the person to change their path will cause the information given to them to become null and void.
Medium
A person who has developed their abilities for communicating with spirits is called a Medium. However, they cannot call up our friends and relatives as one would call someone on the telephone. Our loved ones come to us only when they are ready willing and able to do so.
During a session or demonstration, a medium will often blend more than one method of perception to provide evidence of the survival of the soul. These perceptions enable a medium to act as a bridge for conveying a message from the spirit world to the physical plane. There are many such capabilities and little of the mechanics of them are understood. These phenomena are divided into two classes: Mental and Physical.
Mental
The Mental Phenomena are much more common today and generally provide the most satisfactory evidence and include:
- Clairvoyance – the impression of seeing
- Clairaudience – the impression of hearing
- Clairsentience – the impression of feeling
- Clairgustance – the impression of a scent (smelling)
- Creptesthesia:
Literally hidden sensation. A term used in parapsychology to describe the subliminal (below the threshold of consciousness) perception of occurrences not normally perceived by the ordinary senses, such as clairvoyance and clairaudience.
Physical
The Physical Phenomena of today are generally devoted to healing. This is a Spiritual Healing, not Faith Healing. However, in days gone by, production of ectoplasm for various physical effects was quite common. We rarely see this today.
Proof of Survival
Certain people, called Mediums, are able to communicate with those who have passed over and can furnish conclusive evidence of their continued existence in another world or plane of existence.
Spirit Guide
A Spirit Guide or Guardian Angel is the Spirit who has volunteered to assist a human being in their earthly life. The genuine Spirit Guide can be likened to a missionary who temporarily renounces the advantages of his spirit advancement in order to assist us in our spiritual understanding. Their concern for us is not for our material gain; neither are they possessed of super normal knowledge in scientific matters. We gauge their degree of authenticity in the same ways as we would for any other person; the best of the Spirit Guides show humility, constancy, insight and wisdom.
Gifts of the Spirit
They are abilities with which we are born and which need to be developed and used for the service of humanity. They include intuitive knowledge, wisdom, healing, prophecy and the many forms of mediumship
Death
The discarding of one body and a release of the soul and spirit in order to enter a different plane of existence. As such, death is not to be feared, but to be viewed as another step in the soul’s natural evolution. Often death, or this ‘transition’, is marked by joyous reunions with previously transitioned souls.
Ghost
Often interchanged with ‘Spirit’. Some people refer to Ghosts as earthbound spirits or those who have not yet gone to the light.
Meditation
It means to reflect upon, to ponder over. As you reflect upon the great truths of life you will come into a consciousness of God, for the fullest expression of life is through a realization of spirit and is found in those silent moments when we raise our vibrations to contact those of the higher forces.
God
God is a word to describe what we cannot understand. A rational view is that God is the reason behind all activity and goes by many different names such as Supreme Being, Great Spirit, Creator, Source, Center, Lifeforce, Unseen, Universe.
